Bento lunch boxes and other accomplishments

So Joshua is officially starting preschool next week....ok, so it's officially called "Children's Day Out", but I am calling it preschool because it's less syllables. So, I am a little anxious to see how he's going to react....definitely crying will be involved, it's just a matter of how long and whether they will be calling me to come and pick him up!

My other concern is packing a lunch for him 2x a week. Since we are in a 'nut-free' environment, this takes away one of our sandwich staples of PB&J. And, it also takes away the grilled cheese since it will have to stay room temperature or colder. So, I found some other things to make and we've been practicing all this week eating them at lunch. I suspect that he will be eating all of the crackers and fruits first and then maybe the sandwich part.

Anyways, in my effort to help reduce our carbon footprint, we are going to be packing our lunches bento style. This is a Japanese method of packing your food and I think it's great! We didn't buy any fancy lunch box (I haven't been sucked in yet), just one on clearance @ Walmart. It came with a sandwich holder, so that is our food compartment. I'm going to use a couple of my silicone cupcake holders to hold other parts of his lunch and that way he has a built-in plate and I won't be using massive amounts of baggies every week! I'l try and post a pic (because I'm a dork) of his first lunch next week. Not sure about the first picture of him because it will probably be more of a freakout than a happy picture. We'll see....

Here's another blog: This woman has a great blog about what she packs her children who go to preschool and in bento style. Great ideas for lunches! Pictures included! Go here.

Anyways, other accomplishments (caveat is that some may not be actual accomplishments, just more observations on my part):
-.Joshua now says "Choo Choo" when he sees trains....including the ones on his diapers. I didn't even realize there were trains on his diapers until the other day we were sitting on his changing table and he started saying, "Choo choo" and I noticed he was looking at his diaper!
-Has figured out that he likes Peanut butter and bananas. If I get a banana out for him to eat he goes to the pantry and gets the PB for me to put on the banana! Crazy kid!
-is eating at the table with out his high chair tray...and we have been practicing this week eating off of a plate. I have tried to relinquish control and let him choose what he wants to eat off his plate. One day, he shoved 4 cheez-its and 2 pieces of sandwich in his mouth all at once. Almost choked, but managed to chew it!
-We have gone 5 1/2 days with out a pacifier! The hardest time for him these days is going to bed at night. It still takes him about 20-30 minutes longer to go to sleep, but he's doing it! I wanted to break him before we went to school. I didn't want him sucking on one all day long. Of course, he might try and steal others, but I'll worry about that later.

You're doing great with the pacifier! Since he's gone so long without, do not give it back to him now. He'll forget about it soon enough. I'm sure he'll do great at preschool and you'll love the time by yourself. Just remember - his teachers know how to handle a scared, crying kid, so let them. Go enjoy your day!

You go girl. That is great about the lunches (I should try that, we only put the sandwich in a box, I should put all of it in there!) And about the pacifier too - J isn't allowed to have his at school, and he does just fine, nap and all. Too bad home is a different story!

Your lunch box is so cool (must be your Japanese roots - haha joke). I like the idea of a cream cheese and jam sandwich. I bet my kids would love that!
