So we made it into our house by the skin of our teeth. I think if hadn't moved in any sooner, Derek & I might have killed each other! :) We arrived in Dallas on the 15th of November after 2 busy days of the movers packing us and loading up our stuff. The day they moved our stuff Joshua spent most of the day at the neighbors house playing, while I dashed back and forth checking on him and cleaning the house as the movers were clearing out rooms. That night, Joshua and I spent the night in an empty house...me on the floor and Joshua in his room in his playpen. A little depressing, but as any parent knows, sleeping with a toddler in a hotel and the same room would have been more difficult!
When we got here, we had to spend the week at a friends house until our stuff actually got to Texas. Bless our friends Lena and Chris because they probably didn't know what they were getting into! They were out of town the weekend we moved in and so we had their key. And in true Erika is accident-prone fashion, we went to breakfast Sunday morning and when we came back, I had somehow managed to lock us out of their house with the second lock on the door, which we DID NOT have a key for. So, I called a locksmith at 8 in the morning, lied that I lived at the house and got them there. Bear in mind that it's also about 30 degrees outside, so Derek and Joshua were sitting in the car while I was standing outside waiting. The guy arrives and he asks for proof that we live there and Derek pretends that he's not even there because he thinks we're going to be arrested. So, I break down and tell him that we're friends with the owners and I would call them right then, but my cell is IN THE HOUSE, so if he could just open the door, I would call them right away. The guy looks at me, then says "Let me call my supervisor." He gets on his phone and then hangs up. He says to me, "My boss asked me if you guys looked like burglars and I told him no." Who would rob a place on a Sunday morning with a 17 month old?? Anyways, after that fiasco, the week seemed like a breeze after we told our friends what we did to their front door. Luckily, they were nice enough to say it's ok...although probably by the end of the week, they were like, "We never should have let them stay!"
On the following Sunday the movers came and unloaded and unpacked all of the boxes for us. There were 4 guys doing this and one of them was 64 years old! Amazing, he was hauling dressers and other heavy furniture up the stairs. I felt really out of shape and unhealthy after watching him do that. We spent the rest of the week unpacking, unpacking and unpacking. It helped that Derek was home all week. We did stop for food and football though!
Joshua updates:
- He is ruling the roost here at the new house. The weather is a little chilly (not really, mainly windy), but we are able to go outside everyday, so that is good. Especially because now in NJ, it's too cold to spend too much time outside!
- He has grown in height, weight and hair length. His belly has gotten rounder (or should I say rotund?) to the point that his pants have to hang below the belly and some of his shirts are too short in the front. His pants didn't fit before because he was too little and now they still don't fit because they don't stay on his belly! Cute!
-He is talking gibberish A LOT these days. My favorite thing is to hear him 'talking' to his Dad. He does say actual words these days. Here they are in his favorite order:
1)Cah - this would be for cars....he says them like the Northerner he is!
2)Da - because he is somehow infinitely cooler than me
3)Na - No
4)Mum - Mom
5)Yeah - Yes
-Finally, we are adjusting and trying to start a routine. I joined an Early Childhood PTA in the area that has playgroups and get togethers and we are trying out a Gymboree class this week.
That's it from here. This was a pretty long one, but lots to catch up on!
