Trip to Texas

B&W outline of State of Texas
So we made a trip to Texas, just Joshua and I this past week.  It was definitely full of adventure, some good and some bad.  Our flight to Houston was (of course) delayed because of Hurricane Edouard, which was fine, because we didn't have to sit on the plane for very long.  But once we got on the plane, Joshua made me rethink ever getting on a plane with him.  He was the child that nobody wanted on the plane.  I knew how bad it was when the stewardess came up to me and asked me if I needed any milk or food for him and then brought me food and kleenex to wipe his face. He finally passed out after we took off after crying for about 20 minutes. There was so many new things going on and the only way he could cope was to cry it out.  So, we cried it out to take our nap on the plane and we cried it out on the landing, cried it out when we got put in the car and cried it out when we got put to bed.  Poor baby, I knew he was tired and anxious because when we went to take a nap at my parent's house, I had to sleep with him and he spent more time just laying there with me than actually sleeping.
Once we got past the first day, we had a much better time.  We enjoyed hanging out with my family and playing with them. Of course, both of us had to get used to the stifling humidity...a first for him, but for me, coming from 80 degree weather it was pretty hard.  My Dad, Amanda and I went to see a Texans preseason game which was lots of fun.
We got to visit our friends Lisa and Sarah and see their super cute kids.  Plus, we got to see Uncle Nathan and eat Luling City market BBQ.  I actually forgot (who could forget??) how good brisket tastes when it is cooked right!  Yum Yum!
In other news, Joshua discovered that pushing the stroller is fun and so he is starting to walk around while pushing the stroller.  We are slowly making progress, but he's still pretty stubborn about trying to have us help him walk.  But we got him another push toy which he really likes, so he is pushing that around...sometimes he pushes it so fast that he's practically running....it's so funny to hear him panting after taking a couple of laps around the first floor.
He also has figured out the sign for 'more'.  I use the sign for eating more often, but I noticed when we were in Texas that he kept pointing his finger into his palm.  I finally figured out it was the sign for more which he uses quite frequently....mainly to keep me singing or for more food.  I feel like his court jester most days.  :)
In conclusion, our flight back was MUCH better.....I prayed and begged with Joshua to please behave on the way back and we were perfectly behaved.  I got more compliments on his behavior on the way back....i just kept thinking it was too good to be true and kept expecting a huge meltdown. Of course, we were delayed. We took off on time, but as we were circling New Jersey they put us in a holding pattern and as we were waiting the pilot informed us that we were running out of gas.  So, we had to fly up to a random military base near Syracuse, NY, refuel and then fly back down to Newark...talk about inefficient, huh?  We're exhausted, but relieved to be back home and we have spent the past couple of days cleaning, and laying around the house watching the Olympics.  Go USA!

Traveling with little ones is so stressful - even if it turns out to be a smooth flight the anticipation of them maybe being "that kid" is enough to drive a person batty. Another friend of mine just had a bad flying with kids experience and if you want to feel better about your trip check out "Tami" on my blog sidebar.
